MIQRO

Quantum technologies

The MIQRO project will develop a unique, novel quantum computing architecture - based on controlling trapped ion qubits with microwaves. This approach, fully tested and validated experimentally, permits the control of ion qubits with electric microwave circuits. These can be fabricated with conventional semiconductor processing and microfabrication methods - unlocking the potential for enormous scalability.

This is not the only promise of MIQRO's approach, which uses the MAGIC (Magnetic Gradient Induced Coupling) principle. All-to-all connectivity, large gate fidelities, and the almost complete absence of cross-talk are among them.

But for true scaling, a large set of technologies have to be mastered, and problems have to be solved. MIQRO will address all of them. The partners Leibniz-Universität Hannover (LUH) and  Universität Siegen will jointly design and develop a multi-register chip permitting the placement of multiple traps on the same chip, and enabling exchange and shuttling of ions between them. LUH will also fabricate the chips, as well as provide a cryostat for operation. Siegen in turn will operate and test novel cooling and gate concepts, as well as implement characterization and validation protocols developed by Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf. QUARTIQ will develop and build a full-stack control system.
